HOTEL NOSTALGIA

Story by Joe Cummings / CPA Media (28 July, 2022)

Bangkok's Florida Hotel boasts a long and rich history dating back to 1948 when it first opened its doors as a small guesthouse with just a handful of rooms. Over time it grew in size and popularity, until the larger hotel as we know it today was opened in 1968 to cater to the huge influx of American and Australian armed forces personnel stationed in the region during the Vietnam War. After serving the war effort for a certain number of months, these men were entitled to “rest and recreation” breaks, which usually meant getting away to neighboring Southeast Asian countries.

Although those men and those times have long since faded into the historical background, the Florida remains one of the most beloved three-star hotels in Bangkok, especially among the more retro-minded. The Tampa Coffee Shop, which has been in operation ever since the hotel opened, is valued by a steady Thai clientele for whom the ‘American cuisine' here is deemed to be authentic, although the menu touts the restaurant as “delicious international cuisine” in “a comfortable atmosphere.” The most sought-after dish here is barbecued spare ribs, along with onion soup. The restaurant appears briefly in the Thai romance film “Heart Attack.”

Throughout the years, the Florida hotel has welcomed a diverse range of guests, including politicians, celebrities, and business travelers from all over the world. In the 1960s and 70s, it became known as a hub for social activity and entertainment in the city. Sitting right at the corner of Phayathai intersection, Florida Hotel offers nearly 70 rooms with retro multicolored facades.

Located in the heart of Bangkok, the hotel is just a short walk away from the vibrant shopping district of Pratunam and the famous Platinum Fashion Mall. Guests can also easily access other popular tourist attractions such as the Grand Palace and Wat Arun via public transportation.

The hotel offers a range of comfortable and spacious rooms, each equipped with modern amenities such as air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Guests can choose from a variety of room types, including standard rooms, deluxe rooms, and suites, all designed to cater to the needs of different types of travelers. The rooms are tastefully decorated and furnished with comfortable beds and linens to ensure a good night's sleep.

One of the highlights of the Florida hotel is its rooftop swimming pool, which offers stunning views of the city skyline. Guests can enjoy a refreshing dip in the pool or simply relax on the sun loungers while taking in the panoramic views. The hotel also features a fitness center, a restaurant serving Thai and international cuisine, and a 24-hour front desk with helpful staff who can assist with tour bookings and transportation arrangements.

Overall, the Florida hotel in Bangkok is a great choice for travelers looking for a comfortable and convenient stay in the heart of the city. Despite changing ownership and various renovations over the years, the Florida has maintained its distinctive character and charm, offering guests a taste of traditional Thai hospitality alongside modern amenities and facilities.

In recent years, the hotel has undergone further renovations and upgrades to keep pace with the changing needs and preferences of travelers. Today, it continues to be a popular choice for visitors to Bangkok, thanks to its prime location, comfortable accommodations, and friendly service.
